What have you been up to for the last 40 years?

When reading the Class Prophesy in the Pirate’s Log, I was somewhat taken back to think in twenty years, I would be flipping Ultra Burgers.  Working food service and a go nowhere job was the farthest thing from my mind.  I was headed for mechanical engineering though considerably naïve without tools to fight in a man’s world.   So engineering was not my destination either.

Well, after 40 years of a busy and rewarding life, I find myself close to fulfilling the class prophesy, ”flipping burgers”.  I am a volunteer for the Salvation Army Emergency Disaster Services (EDS) and yes, burger flipping is part of our job description.

EDS is only one of my many volunteer jobs I have held over the last 40 years.  I have been a care giver to numerous senior citizens (my mother is 86 and my latest recipient), volunteered in several Fraternal Orders, holding offices and serving the community.  Royal Arcanum for 38 years and Golden Gate Grange for 27 years are just a couple of examples.  Of course, church and like most active mothers I have volunteered in the schools.  The most gratifying of these school positions was organizing Golden High School’s Career Fairs for 5 years.  Planning conventions are one of my better skills.

The most rewarding volunteer position is 22 years with the Boy Scouts of America whose values I can not praise enough.  I am presently Assistant Council Commissioner for training.  Being a trainer is another one of my quality skills.

Of course my husband, Rich (the greatest thing that ever happened for me), of 37 years and my two children, Elisa, 31, and Matthew, 29, are most important in my life and will always have first priority.  To this family we have added my son-in-law Michael, Grandson Colin, 10, and soon to be daughter-in –law Vicky.  Other family members have included guinea pigs, rabbits, mice, dog and cats.  Currently our feline Gizmo is 17 years old.  We also have many not so tame pets.  They include black bear, mule deer, mountain lion, red fox, wild turkey, a huge variety of birds (including Golden Eagles) and rodents.  These are seen regularly from our kitchen window.  There are others seen occasionally like Bob cat, Coyote, Elk, Mountain Goat, etc., but these we don’t consider pets, especially the rattlesnakes.

It is probably obvious that we do not live in the city.  We are about 5 miles NW of Golden in the foothills, sitting on the side of a mountain in God’s country.  You have to love nature, desire hard work and not care about wealth to truly appreciate the adversity of building your own home with blood, sweat, and tears.  After 34 years, we could not imagine being anywhere else. We have traveled most of the United States, Canada, Europe and visited several other countries. We have seen some form of God’s beauty, interesting culture and beautiful people wherever we have been, but we are always glad to come home.

Home is where I do my work and many of my hobbies.  I am self employed as an Income Tax Practitioner.  For a number of years we operated Phillips Electric from this same office, but now Rich works as an electrical inspector for Jefferson County.

I have also held some interesting jobs over the years.  Back before the Woman’s Lib. Movement, I became the third woman in Denver to be a regular postal carrier (Mailman as we were called then.)   I also worked for IBM back when 128 Bytes of memory required 4 sets of 7 circuit boards wire-wrapped from pin to pin, welded together and placed in a memory bomb.  The whole computer with a tape drive back-up occupied most of a 12’ by 20’ room.

I have always been artistic and wonder why I never took art classes in high school or college.  I guess that I thought they should be a hobby and not something you worked at.

I paint, sew and do a lot of craft activities.  I am enjoying an embroidery sewing machine and like the challenge of digitizing my own designs.  After years with the natural landscaping, I find I am enjoying flower gardens and yard work that is not just clearing fire breaks and cutting pine beetle trees.

In no way can I describe the richness of my life or the many things I have done short of writing a book.  The list of experiences and accomplishments are endless.  No way can I enlighten you of the joys I have received and the great love I have embodied.  With the joys and love also come deep sorrow.  But know that all have been personified ten fold and I consider myself a very lucky and rewarded person.

What do you want to do with the rest of your life (the next 50 years!)

I do not plan to live another fifty years.  I am hoping the Lord will take me before I drive my children to distraction.  I am however looking forward to celebrating at least 50 or 60 years of marriage with my husband.  Enjoying my Grandson and hoping for more grandchildren in the near future are part of my continued pleasures.

One of my future aspirations is to write a fiction book or books based on some interesting family history.  I am also considering some children’s stories as seen from an animal’s point of view.

I hope to continue to travel and explore the cultures and beauty of this great planet.  I hope to continue on with many of my hobbies.  I will probably continue with the Boy Scouts of America or some other project involving youth as they are tomorrows future and they keep me young.  Doing something personal and organizing my hobbies and pictures are always on my list of things to do but, I suppose, I will continue helping others and if the opportunity arises maybe I’ll have just a little more time for my husband and me.
