First Name: Josephine Middle Name: Roberta Maiden Name: Mares Last Name: Dean (but divorced) Nick Name: Josie Current Address: 2605 Lark Drive Colorado Springs, Colorado 80909 Home Phone: (719) 477-9273 E-mail Address: josefamar@aol.com What have you been up to for the last 40 years? Forty years have gone by like sand in a sieve. Looking back, those sands are packed with solid experiences and memories. To start, graduation from Alameda flung me into an alien world - the University of Colorado, Boulder. Gone were the cows in the pasture behind Alameda; the long-held friendships; the familiar streets and by-ways. Instead loomed huge campus buildings ; masses of students; unfriendly professors; the Beatles; strange new ideas, and the SINK (local bar). Then President Kennedy was shot, breaking my heart forever. My uninitiated psyche collided with the burning bras, the pill and Vietnam War protests. I did not complete my B.A. until years later. I earned a B.S. in Behavioral Sciences at University of Southern Colorado in Pueblo, and was nominated to Who’s Who in American Colleges and Universities. I had married an attorney with Colorado Rural Legal Services, experiencing living in and appreciating the beauties of southern Colorado. We had a daughter, named Evelyn (Evie) who recently graduated from an ivy league school, University of Pennsylvania. She is a musician (viola) and earned a double major in Spanish and Anthropology. A world traveler at her young age, she is greatly outstripping her mom, to my joy. I have worked as a caseworker in child protective services and as a legal secretary and paralegal. Unfortunately, I was divorced when my daughter was 4 years old. For eight years, in order to stay home with her, I ran a child care business in my home. I always said I was doing child care because I didn’t believe in it! Then I started telling stories. First with my day care kids, then for parties, and soon people were hiring me - in schools, libraries, community concerts, and local storytelling festivals. My emphasis has been Hispanic folklore; recently I branched into my Mom’s heritage – Jewish folklore. Through the years I have also acted in community theatre. In 1995 I earned a M.A. in Communication at Univ. of Colo., Colorado Springs. I taught public speaking at the university, my favorite occupation. At present, I am self-employed. I have an editing business, and do odd jobs such as occasional child care. This leaves me free to dabble in theatre once in awhile. What do you want to do with the rest of your life (the next 50 years!)
In the future, I look forward to travel and painting, and to enjoying every aspect of life. I consider it a privilege ( and a miracle) to be joining my treasured high school classmates in what will be a joyous and fun reunion..
