What have you been up to for the last 40 years?

How did the last 40 years go by so fast? I guess part of it might have been that if you remember the '60s you weren’t really there!  As crazy as it was though, we had it better than a lot of the kids today.

My wife is Geri (Stack) Drinkard of the class of “64” AHS.  In September of this year we will be married for 35 years.  We have two sons, Michael Shawn and John Franklin.

Michael Shawn our oldest and is 34.  He lives with his wife Cyndie and our grandkids, Amanda and Austin, in Lakewood CO.  He is an electrician and enjoys the work.  He is a wonderful family man and loves his kids dearly.  He lives very near my elderly mother and spends a lot of his "not so spare time" taking care of her.  We are truly blessed to have him.  He obviously got his compassion and caring from Geri’s side of the family.  Amanda and Austin have brought a new meaning to Geri's and my lives.

John Franklin just turned 30.  He lives in Shreveport LA where he sells advertising throughout the southern part of the United States.  John went to the University of Colorado where he graduated in four years with two degrees.  The first was in marketing and the second was in finance.  He did not set out to get two degrees; however, circumstances were such that he could not turn down the opportunity.  Unfortunately those circumstances became possible after what was close to a tragedy.  During spring break of John's junior year he was in a terrible traffic accident coming back from Texas.  He was a passenger in a car that he and four of his fraternity brothers were traveling in. They hit some “black ice” and got sideways sliding across the highway into an oncoming snowplow.  It was a scary time in all of our lives however John came through just fine.  He was in intensive care for quite a while and it took months of recovery, but he was determined to fight his way back from his injuries.  After missing almost a whole semester he went to San Jose State University during the summer semester and took so many credits that when he got back to the University of Colorado he was told he could get two degrees if he would take a full load. John had been planning on having any easy senior year, so much for that!  Once again we are blessed to have our boys and were very proud of both of them.

As for my professional history, shortly after graduation I joined the United States Coast Guard.  I spent four years on active-duty.  I spent time in California, Florida, Washington State, Japan and Iwo Jima.  I reached the pay grade of E-6.  When I left the Coast Guard I came back to Denver and started going to Metro State College.  That's about the time I started dating Geri. I was also installing carpet for K. & K. Installation Company.  Owned by, (a name you might remember), Kenny Kushel.  Darwin Spencer, (also a name you might remember), and I worked together for K&K for a couple of years before we went into business for ourselves.  Darwin and I had a great business going for several years until I decided I wanted to sell carpet for a living instead of installing it.  My old friend Mickey Love, (also a name you might remember), got in my way and offered me a partnership in his installation business.  It was one of those offers I couldn't refuse.  Mickey I ran a very successful installation business until new construction died in the late '70s.  We were able to sell the business and I started selling carpet for Veterans Interiors in Denver.  I was not satisfied with the boredom of selling carpet and was looking for a factory representative job.  Howard McGaha, (yet another name you might remember), heard of a representative opening and through my name into the hat.  That was 23 years ago and I have been working for the same company since.  I am now the National Sales Manager. Taking this new position meant I had to leave Denver and that was not easy. After the kids were out of school and I moved them to California, it was a tough adjustment for Geri.  She hated leaving her family and friends.  It wasn't so bad for the kids but with my traveling job it left her to fend for herself a lot.  Things changed rapidly however, and now that I'm considering retirement and wanting to move back to Denver, Geri would like to stay in California.  The only way I am going to win this argument is if I keep a house in both places.  To do that though, I'm going to have to get the 0 back in my 41K. I do have one big advantage; the grandkids are in Colorado.

The best part of having a traveling job is that I can take Geri with me on a lot of trips. One of our many favorite places that we have to travel is Alaska, which we do for a week or two every year.  We have a lot of friends there.  Mickey Love has an installation business there and you might remember yet another name Dick Carlock.

My hobbies are fishing and golf, which at times can get all, goofed up.  I made the mistake of taking my clubs to Alaska a few years back and now when I go up all my friends want to do is play golf instead of fish.  Needless to say that was bad move on my part.

As you can see there have been quite a few old classmates from Alameda involved in my life. Good friends and good memories are a big part of my life.

My favorite High School memory was Gary Winckel making it to class on time!

What do you want to do with the rest of your life (the next 50 years!)

For the next 50 years of my life I would like to be blessed with the good health I have had so far. After being on the road for as many years as I have, I'm looking forward to more time with the family. I want to spend as much time with Geri and the grandkids as possible.  Teaching my grandkids how to fish and play golf our high on my priority list.

Look forward to seeing all of you

Mike Drinkard
